What is Small Business Saturday
From my research, Small Business Saturday was launched on November 27, 2010. It is now a counterpart to other shopping holidays like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In 2013, Small Business Saturday UK began after seeing the popularity in the United States.
Small Business Saturday is trademarked by American Express and is associated with their shop small movement. The idea is that rather than shopping big box, go small! Us small business owners and entrepreneurs love this. Smart move, AMEX. This is how American Express describes why they founded it.
It’s a day founded by American Express to celebrate and support the small businesses that make communities unique. Now that over 1.5 million more places in the U.S. started accepting American Express® Cards in 2017, it’s never been easier to find nearby small businesses where you can use your Card, #ShopSmall, and support your community.

So is this just a thing? Well, actually this “thing” is working. In 2017, Small Business Saturday did see a dip in sales – from $15 billion to $12.9 billion on November 25, 2017. That said, people know about this and the popularity of this business “holiday” continues to grow.
The data show that 70 percent of U.S. consumers are aware of Small Business Saturday, and 58 percent said they shopped or dined at more than one independently owned business this weekend. What’s more, support for small businesses went beyond brick-and-mortar with 35 percent saying they shopped online.
